DONDA BEAR Update 2: 3D Modeling & Problem-Solving

DONDA BEAR: Update 2

Crafting the DONDA BEAR in 3D

Hey everyone! We hope you enjoyed the last Update. Now, let's dive into Update 2. Here, we focus on transforming our ideas and drawings into a digital 3D model and discuss some of the challenges we faced along the way.

To begin the next phase of this project, we had to go back to our beginnings. For the 3D modeling, we used the JIK BEAR as a foundation and developed the DONDA BEAR from there. We scoured the web for high-quality references and watched the 2nd Listening Party more times that we can count, just so we could translate that iconic look as faithfully as possible into our 3D model.

Modeling challenges emerged early in the process. For example, we had to rework the spike jacket after missing the mark on the shape and style of the actual jacket beneath the spikes. We also had to adjust the bulletproof vest and correct the size of the chest patch. However, the biggest challenge was perfecting the Balenciaga boots, and this took a WHILE to do. After numerous revisions, we finally achieved a result we were happy with.

These are the key stages of revisions we went through to achieve our 'final' model. We still had to figure out the best way to implement the removable eyes, as well as address some boot issues that cropped up later but overall the model was in a pretty great place.

And finally, our 'completed' 3D model. Here's a semi-final turntable vid of the DONDA BEAR for your enjoyment.
